Welcome to davidjohnpaul.com

This site is a location for me to collect and publish information about various projects I work on, or information that is useful for me to disseminate or recall later. A lot of this data is not publicly accessible, but you may find something useful.

I am a computer scientist, originally from Newcastle, but now living in Armidale, where I work at the University of New England as a Lecturer in Computational Science.

I am a computer scientist interested in: service-oriented computing; the Internet and distributed systems; security and privacy; and teaching and education. I have experience with nation-wide research projects such as the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank and the QuON Web survey system.

I completed my PhD at the University on Newcastle, Australia, working on a service-oriented computing project that concentrated on improving cooperation between multiple different parties even when they are unaware they are working together. This resulted in a new model that allows both service providers and consumers to better determine the level of service they should offer or accept.

From 2005 to 2015 I was also working as a member of the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank. In this role, I designed, developed, and maintained a large nation-wide database and Web application linking clinical, neurological, and genetic information of both people with schizophrenia and linked controls, and providing mediated access to researchers.

In 2012, at the completion of my PhD, I continued working with the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank and also joined the University of Newcastle’s Health Behaviour Research Group. A lot of the research performed by this group requires the use of surveys and other online interventions, but existing survey systems did not meet all of their needs. Along with other research, I was part of a team that designed and built the QuON online survey system, which is now used in multiple institutions around Australia.

In 2015, I joined the University of New England as part of the new interdisciplinary computational science team. I am currently involved in research with the Sheep CRC, involving individual animal management and passing useful information back to farmers.
